The inside of the Mustang smelled of dead opossum and stale cigarettes. The engine was burning oil, and there was a thwacking noise she was sure meant the timing was off. She tolerated it, hoping the oil leak didn’t mean the engine was overheating anytime soon. The gauge was stuck all the way on cold.

She had already gone to the center point of several areas of Memphis on the grid she’d mapped out. None of them had indicated her truck was anywhere near. Next time she would invest in better technology. Next time, she laughed to herself. Next time wouldn’t happen. One-way mission.

She stared at the map on her screen. Nothing. Maybe Kate had been lying about having people in Memphis. Or maybe she had changed her mind and gone back to Albuquerque. The thought of losing that truck pissed her off more and more. Six more grids to check, but Stella feared the Mustang was not up for the job. Her choice was to ditch it and steal another or to coax it along until she found Kate, the truck, and her money.

She followed the map to the next grid block, putting her on a two-lane country road heading east. The smoke output was getting worse, and she was getting hungry. As she approached a stop sign, she saw the sign for a garage. Jeorge’s Garage. She’d take a chance.

The parking lot was gravel. Broken-down vehicles lined one side. Two bay doors were rolled up. There was a classic Chevy on a lift and a Jeep with the hood up in the two bays. This was her kind of place. Stella pulled up to one of the bays.

She had two ways to do this. Without her mask on, she’d had the option to act like a cripple in distress. She hated that. But that was how people reacted to her. Either fear or pity. Kate was a rare middle ground. Right now, she needed the pity, so it didn’t piss her off so bad to play that card.

She pulled the ball cap on before getting out of the car.

The guy who came out to greet her was a grandfatherly type. This made her happy. “Evening, miss.” He pulled his shop cloth out of his back pocket and rubbed his forehead just like Uncle Danny used to do. Her heart squeezed. She hoped he would trust her as much as she already trusted and liked him. “How can I help you?”

She patted the hood on the Stang. “I got a leak, and the timing is a degree or so slow.”

He nodded his approval of her knowledge, or at least of the terminology.

“I’m just passing through and don’t have my own garage to work on it. You think you can take a look?”

“I was about to go home. But pull her in over there.” He pointed to a carport area off to the side of the shop. He walked in that direction through the garage and left her to move the car.
